"Officials say more than 550 people have been killed on India's side of the Line of Control dividing the disputed Himalayan region, including more than a dozen soldiers who died in a landslide.

Some 900 people were injured and thousands of homes have been destroyed. Many of the dead are already being buried.

The town of Kupwara close to the Line of Control was worst-hit, with more than 250 bodies recovered there so far.

Nearby Uri was also badly affected, with 104 dead.

Thousands of houses have been damaged, mostly in the border districts of Baramullah, Kupwara and Poonch. Hospitals have treated hundreds of trauma cases.

Landslides blocked the key highway that connects Srinagar to the rest of India. The 200-year-old Moti Mahal fort in Poonch district collapsed. "
