Out of the News: Sudanese Cairo

Egypt, Cairo. The images that come to our minds first would not necessarily be the migrant communities living in Cairo and originating from the Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia or Erythrea.

They are however part of Egypt’s reality. For decades, Sudanese and others from the Horn of Africa have fled their country; the war; the insecurity. They have come to Egypt, to try to obtain refugee status or to be resettled to third countries.

In Cairo, The Association Refuge-Egypt, Walking with the Displaced, provides humanitarian and spiritual assistance to these refugees and asylum seekers (reception, clothing, food, medical care, advocacy work, cultural orientation courses, setting up of income generating projects…).

Nassima had the opportunity to assist Refuge-Egypt for a few months in 2002, which gave us a glimpse of another human reality…

Egypt does not allow refugee camps to be settled; the migrant communities have to try to make a living in a city or country where they have no opportunities, no rights and no security.

The recent events of last Friday – a “camp” set up since the end of September close to the UN offices in Cairo, and broken up forcibly by the Egyptian police – have suddenly reminded the world media of a human disaster claimed to be intolerable.

Twenty or thirty people have been killed. Women, children, old men… Many of those who survived have been taken by bus to “security” camps South of the city. One does not really know in what conditions they are held there, for how long and what for…

Today, our thoughts and prayers are with those people and friends we have known over there and who continue the struggle for surviving…
